You may not have thought of visiting the beach in the winter, but the winter season has many benefits for
you:

- The cost is lower.
- Everything is uncrowded.
- You have your pick of dates and properties.
- Restrictions on beach driving are removed.
- You can wait until the last minute to pick out good weather.

Here were some special days at the beach last winter:

December 1, 2007
We experienced an unusual snow at the beach with a dusting of snow down on the sand.  Up on the bluff,
people made snowmen.  The snow lasted just that afternoon - long enough to enjoy, but not long enough
to become a nuisance.

December 25, 2007
It snowed again on Christmas morning and afternoon.  It set a very peaceful and cozy mood, fitting to the
holiday.

January 5, 2008
A storm the previous night and a high tide combined to completely swallow the beach.  The seagulls
moved into the RV campground and the sandpipers dodged the foam on the last small strip of sand.

January 13, 2008
We drove up to Kalaloch and Ruby Beach (1 1/2 hours one way).  The weather was dry all day and sunny
inland by Lake Quinault.  At the Kalaloch Lodge we had the restaurant to ourselves and were seated by
the best picture window to enjoy the lodge's fantastic view of the creek gorge, log-strewn beach, and
ocean.

March 1, 2008
It was sunny and almost warm - upper 50s.  I walked barefoot down the beach to Copalis Rock.

March 15, 2008
Another sunny day on the beach.  We drove to Kalaloch Beach 2 and the Hoh Rain Forest (2 1/4 hours one
way).  We saw a bald eagle on the beach.  There was a bit of rain in the rain forest, but that is to be
expected.  Hardly any people were around.

Here are some rainy day ideas for the North Beach.  You may get a mixture of sun and rain:

- Dine at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge, enjoy view of the lake, and walk the half mile rainforest loop
trail between showers.
- Swim at the Hoquiam YMCA's indoor waterpark, racquetball and weightlifting available too, $15 day
pass per family.
- Visit the Quinault Beach Resort casino followed by dining and shopping in Ocean Shores.
- Tour Duck Lake and the Ocean Shores canals on a fully-enclosed, heated, electric boat.
- Drive down the beach to Copalis Rock or Point Grenville and enjoy the scenery.
- Visit the Museum of North Beach

Paddies Perch pies are proving to be a hit and are even getting kind of famous...so famous that the locals
know to order their pie before they order dinner.  Patty and Eddy have been known to sell out their tasty
pies within the first hour of dining.  Just a bit of advice for our North Beach guests - go at 5pm and order
your pie...even if you don't dine, you can 'take out'.  Whether you like triple chocolate almond roca,
banana cream, or blackberry, Paddies pies are to die for.

Paddies Perch is located in Pacific Beach on Main Street and is a small local restaurant with home
cooked food.

A kids favorite on the North Beach is the Recreation Center of the Ocean Crest Resort with its big, warm
swimming pool with a large shallow area.  Nearby is a hot tub and the facility also includes a
well-equipped exercise room and locker room with showers..  The pool room is very beautiful with
cathedral ceilings, skylights, cedar paneling, and original artwork.  The cost is $6 per person, when
purchased in a booklet of 5.  Towels are provided.

The resort's restaurant also has a good reputation.

The Ocean Crest Resort is located at the south end of Moclips directly on highway 109.
