DUCK LAKE AND THE GRAND CANAL
The interior of the Ocean Shore peninsula is criss-crossed
by waterways: Duck Lake - the largest lake, the Grand Canal -
the largest canal, and many other canals and small lakes.
The canals and lakes are lined by vacation homes; however,
some space is given over to wildlife and parks. Several
islands in the middle of Duck Lake have been left completely
untouched. Here you will find nesting blue heron and deer
will swim to the island to give birth to their foals in safety.
Otter, beaver, seagulls, and other birds are also found on the
lake and waterways.
A great way to enjoy the lake and canals is to rent an
electric-powered party boat from the Ocean Shores Electric
Boat Company. The boats seat ten, come with a picnic table
and CD player, clear plastic panels can be closed against the
weather (or opened on a nice day), and the canopy overhead
provides shade. The boats travel slowly and are easy to
drive.
