WESTHAVEN STATE PARK
The beach at Westhaven is tucked below the South Jetty
directly west of Westport. The beach is backed up by a
crumbling sand cliff ranging from 10 to 30 feet high.
Westhaven is the premier surfing location in Washington
state. I visited on a day in June when 50 surfers were to be
found out in the water. Milling around the beach were their
dogs, waiting for the return of their masters. The summer
waves are rather mild and I didn't see anyone getting up on
their boards for very long. A better time to surf is following a
winter storm.
Behind these cliffs and facing into the harbor is a perfect
semi-circular sandy beach. A very steep cliff of sand leads
down to it. This is an irresistible place for kids to play: rolling
down the sand and struggling back up.
On our visit we saw seals poke their heads out of the water
and a flock of small pelicans fly by.
Across the harbor mouth you can see the North Jetty at
Ocean Shores, protecting the other side of the harbor mouth.
