GRAYS HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE
The Grays Harbor Lighthouse stands at the southwest end of
Westport. It is the tallest lighthouse in Washington state with
a 135 step climb to the top. It was completed in 1898 and
originally lit by a kerosene lamp that had to be refilled every
two hours. Each day the keeper would clean the lens and the
windows. The lens mechanism floated in a bed of mercury,
which nobody knew at the time was so poisonous.
Today the lighthouse is completly automated with a couple
halogen lights. The old and new lights give off the same
pattern of red and white lights at a designated interval. This
light's pattern means "safe harbor nearby" - Grays Harbor.
This information would also appear on navigation charts.
The docent gives an excellent tour, but they close at 4:00pm,
so get there early.
